Princeville is a town in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, United States. It is located on the Tar River, approximately 10 miles from the city of Tarboro and 25 miles from Greenville. The town was first established in 1865 by recently freed slaves after the Civil War. It was the first town in the United States to be incorporated by African Americans.
Princeville has a rich history, but the town has also struggled with flood damage several times in its history, including significant destruction in 1999 during Hurricane Floyd. The town is situated in a floodplain and is vulnerable to flooding, which has led to many residents relocating.
